Churches/Iglesias

La Candelaria contains many beautiful, centuries-old Catholic churches. Cathedral de Bogota La Catedral de Bogotá – On Bogotá’s main plaza, Simón Bolívar, this massive cathedral was built between 1807 and 1823. See those small doors on either side of the main doors? Supposedly, sinners were once kept there, and brought out onto the plaza to be flogged as penance.

Iglesia las Aguas, or 'the waters,' on El Eje Ambiental (Avenida Jimenez).

The beautiful Señora de Las Aguas Church was built in the 1600s and has inside beautiful artwork, including the famous painting La Virgen del Rosario by Antonio Acero de la Cruz. Alongside it, in what was at times a jail, a monastery and an asylum, is an antiques/handicrafts store, whose entrance is to the right of the main door. The stuff’s expensive, but walking through and looking is free. The name ‘las aguas’ means waters, and refers to the San Francisco River, which now flows through pipes below the adjoining Eje Ambiental.
